This wasn't just a monster battler or a dungeon crawler. But beyond the basics, there were so many other elements at play here. At its core, this is a dungeon crawler where you gather monster eggs from a nigh-endless tower, take them home to hatch them, and then repeat the process until you've got a pair of familiars and a set of equipment strong enough to reach the top. I'm not entirely sure what it was that had me hooked on this game, but I think it may have been the variety. There I was again, a teenager sitting on the cold floor of my parents' basement, climbing a tower high into the sky with my begoggled miniature dragon and floating flame knight. And yet, when I saw my first glimpse of gameplay footage for Palworld, an upcoming monster-battler in which you, a lowly human, actually get to participate in the action beyond tossing potions and barking orders, it all came flooding back. I've probably spent decades without it so much as crossing my mind. And then there are games that you played the hell out of and then never thought of again, but that doesn't take away from the joy they once brought you.Īzure Dreams definitely fell into that second category for me, at least until recently. Even if you haven't laid hands on them in years, their detailed stories, complex combat, and overall fun factor are a standard to which you continue to hold games for your entire life. There are some classic games that stay with you, in the back of your mind.
